The forthcoming revival of David Mamet's American Buffalo starring John Leguizamo and Cedric the Entertainer has booked the Belasco Theatre for its Broadway run. The play replaces another Mamet revival, Speed-the-Plow, which had been scheduled to play the Belasco but will now open at the Ethel Barrymore on October 26. American Buffalo will begin previews on October 31 and open on November 17, directed by Robert Falls.
American Buffalo tells the story of a trio of small-time crooks who come to blows over a plan to steal a valuable buffalo nickel. The play premiered off-Broadway in 1976 and won the 1977 Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best American Play. Al Pacino appeared in a 1981 off-Broadway revival as the elder crook, known as "Teach," and William H. Macy played the role in a 2000 revival at Atlantic Theater Company, founded by Macy and Mamet. Dustin Hoffman played the role in a 1996 film version of the play.
American Buffalo is produced by Elliott Martin, Ben Sprecher, Louise Forlenza, Wendy Federman and Nelle Nugent.
